So what is the Bulgaria currency? The unit of currency in Bulgaria is the lev which is made up of 100 stotinki (just as 1 pound is made up of 100 pence). The Bulgarian National Bank issues the Bulgarian currency.

What is the Bulgarian Currency Worth?

The Bulgaria currency is set at a fixed exchange rate to the EUR. The below shows what it s worth vs the major currencies (at time of writing 19th Feb 2005).

1.00 BGN = 0.35 GBP

1.00 BGN = 0.51 EUR

1.00 BGN = 0.67 USD

History of the Bulgaria currency

On the 5th of July, 1999, the Bulgarian National Bank re-denominated the Bulgarian Lev by introducing new banknotes and coins.

The Bulgarian lev was replaced by a new lev in a ratio of 1,000:1. That is to say, as of that date 1,000 old leva equaled 1 new lev.

Future of the Bulgaria currency

The Bulgarian Lev is currently pegged to the EURO and the current government has committed to maintaining this peg until 2009 when Bulgaria is expected to enter the EuroZone.

However Bulgaria is holding elections this year and opinion polls indicate that the current opposition party, the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) will come into power.

A statement by the leader of the BSP in January 2005 that he intended to maintain the currency board that pegs the lev to the EURO at least until joining the EU in 2007 which sparked a sharp reaction from the government and the IMF.

As such the future of the Bulgaria currency is a little uncertain, however seems to be pegged to the EURO until at least January 2007 and perhaps beyond.
