Pirin Mountains. The Pirin mountains house Bulgaria's second highest mountain, with it's highest peak being called Vihren (2,914). It also has approximately 176 mountain lakes and about 100 varieties of rare plants, including the edelweiss and the famous Baikousheva fir, almost 1,300 years old. At the foot of the Pirin's is the newest and largest ski resort of Bansko. Rila mountains. The Rila mountains seems to be a piece of the Alps thrown into the heart of the Balkans with its 130 Alpine peaks above 2000m, glacial valleys and lakes. The snow cover on the parts of average altitude and the Alpine parts often exceeds 2m. Eastern Rila is the highest part of the mountain where one can visit Rila's highest mount-Moussala (2925m) and the 10 top peaks, and the highest lake in Rila-the Glacial lake (2709m). Rhodope Mountains. The Rhodope mountains are one of the oldest mountains in Bulgaria - the land where panpipes, Orpheus and the Orphic Cult originated, a region rich in gems and ores, picturesque villages and hospitable people. This is a unique mountain, considered by the Indian meditation schools as one of the 7 sacred mountains on the Earth, the oldest land on the Balkan Peninsula. Here the travelers will find out a great variety of plants, animals, birds and minerals. Rhodope Mountains are located in the southern part of the country. The highest peak is Golyam Perelik(2191 m).
